aerodynamics

Aerodynamics is all about what happens to air when it hits a moving object. In cycling, it’s about how a bike and rider overcome the resistance that results from moving forward through the air.

In a nutshell, here’s how it works: the faster you go, the higher the wind drag and the more power you need to increase your speed. As every cyclist knows, to go from 20mph to 25mph takes a big effort, but to go from 25mph to ride at 30mph is beyond most people. If you want the mathematics, drag increases at roughly the square of velocity, but the power you need to overcome that drag increases at the cube of the velocity.

However, what the mathematics doesn't tell you is that a rider with a technical advantage is often able to go faster than one with a higher power output – and that’s where HED comes in.

HED products are designed so that every watt you produce propels you forward at the highest possible speed. We’ve spent hundreds of hours in the wind tunnel and have developed wheels and components with world-beating drag factors. We also recognise that a true zero-degree headwind almost never happens out on the road. Just a 5mm lateral shift makes a headwind a crosswind That’s why all of our wheels are designed and tested using wind angles from 0 to 20 degrees. By carefully regulating the depth and shape of our wheels, we achieve optimum wheel performance no matter what the wind conditions.
