This is another in our fastidious collection of wheels that can lay claim to being a fantastic all round performer. Our Stinger 5 sits naturally between our full climbing wheelset, the Stinger 3 and our most versatile wheelset, the Stinger 6.
The Stinger 5 realises it’s full potential when used in similar circumstances to our Stinger 6. The Stinger 5 excels naturally in going up hill, across rolling and flat race courses and surging along time trial courses on windy days. It differs from our Stinger 6 in that it majors slightly more on uphill performance as opposed to the Stinger 6’s penchant for drag reduction. The Stinger 5, with its shallower rim profile and naturally lighter rim weight, makes it an even more valid choice when battling against the gradients. Because it is a naturally stiffer wheel than our Stinger 3 full climbing wheelset it becomes very relevant to the larger, more powerful rider who needs a climbing wheel that majors on responsive, lateral stiffness.
Lightweight, full carbon rim. Ultimate lateral stiffness
The Stinger 5 rim, optimised for use with tubular tyres, is tuned via our “Stability Control Technology” (SCT) allowing us to offer sublime aerodynamic performance. Despite a rim depth of “only” 50mm the Stinger 5, with its 28mm wide, bulbous rim profile, outperforms many of our competitor’s wheelsets, from an aerodynamic perspective, that have rim depths of up to 80mm. Despite this increased aero performance our SCT profile ensures that handling in cross winds is like that of a wheel with only 25mm of rim depth. This rim profile also boasts a wider tyre bed. This wider bed “hugs” the tubular tyre offering more stability to the tyre sidewalls. This alters the tyre-to-road “footprint” morphing it in to a shorter but wider impression that, in turn, hugely reduces rolling resistance. This “hugging” of the tyre also cuts drag as the rim-to-tyre junction becomes seamless, devoid of creating any turbulent air.
Two types of carbon are utilized within this rim structure to fully enhance the riding experience. The bulbous rim “sidewalls” are realised in UD carbon. This UD carbon is light and laterally stiff but also adds a certain amount of vertical compliance, enhancing comfort. 3k carbon then makes the brake track and structural tyre bed. This carbon is hugely laterally stiff but also dissipates heat during prolonged braking. This carbon, when paired with any good carbon specific brake pad offers great stopping power and modulation.
Smooth spinning and efficient power transfer
Our own “Sonic Black” hubs, affording unprecedented rotational smoothness and durability through the use of hi-grade ABEC 5 stainless bearings and oversize axels, are adopted within the build. The oversized axels spread the load that naturally occurs during riding, extending bearing life and increasing rolling smoothness. The rear hub is available with full compatibility for either Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo gear systems’ ensuring any bike is catered for and full serviceability is allowed through the use of 2 simple 5mm allen keys. Our hubs are then laced to the full carbon rim via the industry leading Sapim CX-Ray spokes. The Stinger 5 is hand built in the US using 18 radial laced spokes in the front wheel for optimised aerodynamics and 24 spokes, 2-crossed in the rear for lateral stiffness and power transfer guaranteeing a wheelset with a comprehensive level of performance.
A full wheelset weight of 1381g confirms that the Stinger 5 is a very alluring climbing wheel especially when factoring in the additional lateral stiffness. The wheelset is then complemented and completed with our own light weight titanium quick release skewers and HED valve extenders.
An option for cross
Our Stinger 5 also come in a specific version for Cyclo Cross. With the same foundations as the all out road version the Cross version differs slightly by widening the tyre bed of the rim to better support the sidewalls of a wider cross specific tyre. This cross option can be chosen within the drop down menus when specifying any order requirements.
