With disc brakes now well and truly ensconced within the world of road bikes we naturally offer a wide selection of our wheels in a disc brake option. Our disc brake range takes our industry leading aerodynamic rims and couples these with the increased performance of a disc brake to offer the fastest combination across any course or route. From hard working all rounder through to aero thoroughbred be sure that we have the wheelset for your disc brake bike.
Introduction to the Stinger 6 Disc Brake
The Stinger 6 Disc Brake wheelset could most certainly be pigeonholed as “the perfect race wheel”. Road races across a multitude of courses whether flat or hilly, time trials, triathlons and hard, pro level sprinting are all catered for within the Stinger 6’s heady performance CV. With its mid-depth, 60mm profile it can quite easily be put to devastating use across so many racing applications.
Despite being lethal across rolling and flat race routes the Stinger 6 Disc Brake also climbs with more than just admiration. Because of its relatively light weight, but, more importantly, because of its superior aerodynamics the Stinger 6 remains an incredibly valid choice even when the roads turn skywards. Depending on rider development and speed the Stinger 6 could still be the best possible choice when climbing gradients of up to 5-6% even when vying for use against ultra lightweight wheelset options.
Hard, blistering, leg numbing out of the saddle efforts are also covered by the Stinger 6. The superior stiffness that is afforded naturally by a deeper rim but that is also added to the Stinger 6 via our superior construction methods and material lay-ups means that this wheelset is a mean sprinter. Whether charging for the line or accelerating hard out of the corners the Stinger 6 responds instantly, holding wheels for fun, and, when the time is right, aids the rider to come out of the slipstream and power for the win.
Full carbon rim, super aero, super stiff
The 60mm deep, 28mm wide, full carbon rim is suitable for tubular tyres and offers a great blend of light weight, superb lateral stiffness and, due to the “Stability Control Technology” tuned profile, fantastic aerodynamic performance and cross wind stability. The wider rim “cradles” the tubular tyre, smoothing the rim-to-tyre junction which acts to reduce turbulent airflow in this area therefore reducing drag. This “cradling” also grants more tubular tyre sidewall stability altering the tyre-to-road “footprint” morphing it in to a shorter but wider impression. This hugely reduces rolling resistance as well as increasing cornering grip.
The rims then spin around our "545" Disc Brake hub set. This hubset features ABEC 5 hi-grade stainless bearings to minimise friction to a minimum all the while offering a good level of longevity. Our "545" disc hubs come as stock with either 12mm or 15mm thru axles at the front and 12mm at the rear. We also have a conversion available separately for standard quick release skewers allowing complete compatibility with any disc brake bike. Shimano/SRAM and Campagnolo compatibility is then offered ensuring that any bike set up is catered for before a 5 pawl, 46 tooth freehub affords rapid, efficient drive engagement.
Efficient build, adapted for disc brakes
Stiffness and strength is integrated in to the wheelset with Sapim CX-Ray spokes, hand laced and trued. Both front and rear wheels utilise 24 spokes built in a 2-cross pattern. This pattern ensures maximum wheel stiffness and efficiency even during all out sprints or hard uphill efforts but also copes admirably with the extra forces generated on the hubs and spokes by the improved braking performance of disc brakes.
The wheelset is completed with our own HED valve extenders.
